The 1968 series Datsun 1600 is one of the more collectible from the era – this is the iconic four door that broke the mould in Australian motorsport. Mount Panorama Bathurst class winner (and top 3 places) in 1968 with wins in the following years in 1969, 1970 & 1971. It didn’t just conquer on tarmac, it took away multiple Australian rally titles and many other motorsport achievements.
This Datto 1600 for sale in Sydney is a hidden gem, one of those unique barn finds that you rarely come across. There are rumours the yellow flames helped scorch a few paddock lap records, but unfortunately the official records were damaged in bush fires. We have been offered money just for the flames on their own, but we’ve refused, we think it would destroy the spirit of the vehicle completely.
This 1600 is quite unique. Forget about Mercedes new anti-side pod ideas – this Datto features an intricate cob-web mesh design around the front bumper that aids aero performance around the headlamps to channel air down its flanks. The interior has a completely stripped to save weight too, roll cage already set up & grippy deep steering wheel devoid of stupid buttons or gizmos – this is all about pure driving with the odd slide or drift when it takes your fancy.
Don’t be fooled by the engine in the passenger seat, this isn’t a sports sedan that has been heavily modified, better yet, it’s your spare engine that you can have ready between practice, qualifying & your race day. We’ve checked it over & can guarantee there are no bullet holes anywhere & we’ve been told most of the body modifications were aimed at letting the creepy crawlies get out or improve performance.
The two tone paint job has potential for concours awards after a buff, its striking blue & red contrasting paint with its unique patina will be sure to draw attention wherever it goes. It does have a few nicks and dents, but nothing a rubber mallet or some bog wouldn’t fix, rubbin’s racing right?
